Don’t Forget to File Your Homestead Exemption!

If you recently closed on your home — good news:

You can now file your Homestead Exemption.

Before you do, make sure your driver’s license reflects your new address. The appraisal district will require your ID to match the property address.

A Quick Note About Purchase Price

Texas is a non-disclosure state, which means the sales price of your home is not public record.

When you file your homestead exemption, you may see a blank asking what you paid for the property.

You do NOT have to fill that in —
unless you paid less than the appraised value.

In that case, it may benefit you to disclose it.

Very Important:

If you receive mail asking you to pay someone to file your homestead exemption…

🗑️ Throw it in the trash.

Filing your homestead exemption is FREE through your county appraisal district.

No third party is required.
